Santo Domingo. – El Instituto Nacional del Cáncer Rosa Emilia Sánchez Pérez de Tavares (INCART), en su Centro de Rehabilitación Oncológica (CRO), es el único hospital que posee una clínica de linfedema y atiende a más de 600 pacientes al año con este padecimiento.

Liliam Elizabeth Soto, encargada del centro explicó que el linfedema o edema linfático es causado por una acumulación anormal de líquidos, proteínas y residuos celulares (linfa) en los tejidos debajo de la piel. Ocurre cuando hay una interrupción en el sistema linfático por la obstrucción, destrucción o ausencia de los ganglios linfáticos de una región, que puede afectar tanto miembros superiores como inferiores, la cara y el cuello.

Soto  detalló que en el Centro de Rehabilitación Oncológica se trata con la Terapia Descongestiva Compleja la cual consiste en una serie de medidas que se caracterizan por ser coadyuvantes y no deben aplicarse de manera aislada.
